What's so different about HOTL3?
In other MUDs, you usually choose your class and from there, your
path and your skills are determined. As HOTL3 is a skills-based
mud, it is the other way round. Depending on the type and number
of skills and spells you learn, an appropriate class will be assigned
to you. For instance, if you learn mostly offensive and destructive
spells, you would be a mage, but if you become equally skilled in
healing later on, you might switch class to sage.
A class is more than just a name. In fact, being in a certain class
usually grants you additional fighting or spell-casting abilities.
Naturally, you shouldn't expect to become a Crusader or a Spellweaver
in Generation 1 or Generation 2, because the higher up a class is,
the more skills/spells it takes to attain it.
There are 33 classes available:

Like everyone else, you start your career as an Adept.
You either have not learnt any books, or have not learnt enough
to be assigned a particular class. Being 'classless', adepts are
not entitled to any bonuses. The moment you learn a book and practise
the skills or spells in it, your class will change.
